Short answer: Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai can fit into 10 days without feeling like a checklist. The workable limit is three major cities: allow three full days in Beijing, two in Xi’an and two in Shanghai, then protect the arrival day, departure day and two travel transitions. Adding a fourth major city usually makes the route rushed.
The workable 10-day shape
- Beijing: arrival plus 3 full days
- Xi’an: 2 full days around a rail or flight transition
- Shanghai: 2 full days plus departure
- Rule: no same-day headline sightseeing after a long transfer

Why three cities is the practical limit
Each move costs more than the scheduled train or flight time. Hotel checkout, station or airport transfer, security, boarding, arrival and the next hotel all belong to the same travel day. Two transfers leave enough room for meaningful sightseeing; a third transfer starts to remove the time that made the extra city worth adding.
1. Start with Beijing when possible
Beijing has the highest concentration of time-sensitive headline sights. Starting here gives you recovery time after an international flight and protects a full Great Wall day. Reserve the Forbidden City and other dated attractions as soon as the booking window opens.
2. Give Xi’an two complete sightseeing days
The Terracotta Army is outside the center, so it should not share a day with a long intercity transfer. A second day keeps the City Wall, Muslim Quarter and museum choices from being reduced to a rushed evening.
3. Use Shanghai as the flexible finish
Shanghai works well at the end because central neighborhoods, the Bund and Pudong can be adjusted around weather and the final flight. Choose the hotel with the departure airport and final-day plan in mind.
Train or flight between the cities?
Beijing–Xi’an is often a strong high-speed rail sector because both city centers connect well to their main stations. Xi’an–Shanghai is longer, so compare a daytime train with a well-timed flight by complete door-to-door time. Live schedules, luggage and hotel location can change the answer.
When to slow the route down
- You travel with young children, older relatives or reduced mobility.
- Your international arrival is late or follows a long multi-sector flight.
- You want food, craft, photography or neighborhood time beyond the icons.
- Your dates overlap a major Chinese public holiday.
In these cases, remove one city or add two to three days. A calm two-city trip often produces a better first visit than four city names on a schedule.
Should you add Chengdu, Guilin or Zhangjiajie?
Not on the same 10-day trip unless one of the core cities is removed. Chengdu can replace Shanghai for food and pandas; Guilin can replace Xi’an for landscape; Zhangjiajie needs enough time for weather, transfers and mountain access. Treat each as a route decision, not an extra.
How First Landing makes the 10 days work
We match hotel location, attraction reservations, private transfers, guides, rail or flight timing and luggage handling as one operating plan. The route stays flexible where it can and protects the dated bookings that cannot move.
Frequently asked questions
Can you visit Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai in 10 days?
Yes. It is workable with three full Beijing days, two full Xi’an days and two full Shanghai days, with the remaining time used for arrival, departure and two city-to-city transfers.
What is the best order?
Beijing to Xi’an to Shanghai is efficient for many first-time trips. Reverse it when international flights or fixed dates work better through Shanghai.
Should I add a fourth city?
Usually no. Add one only by removing days from, or replacing, another city.
Is the route suitable for families or older travelers?
Yes, with slower mornings, centrally placed hotels, private transfers and no tight connection after a long rail or flight sector.
Planning note: live schedules, attraction reservation rules and public-holiday conditions must be checked for the exact travel dates.
