China High-Speed Rail for First-Time Visitors: Tickets, Passports and Station Entry

How to book with 12306, use a foreign passport, enter the station, board the train and connect the complete trip.

By 1st China Trip and First Landing International TravelUpdated 10 October 2026

Short answer: For a first China high-speed rail journey, complete passport identity verification before booking, enter the passenger name exactly as shown on the passport, check the specific station rather than only the city, carry the original passport used for the booking, and allow time for security and a possible manual ticket gate. High-speed rail works especially well between Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu and Chongqing when station transfers are planned as part of the itinerary.

The complete station journey: arrival to exit

  1. Arrive at the correct station: confirm the full station name and terminal before leaving the hotel.
  2. Pass security: keep the original passport and booking details ready, and allow extra time during holidays or at large stations.
  3. Complete the identity check: if the automatic gate does not read a foreign passport, follow staff directions to a manual inspection lane.
  4. Find the waiting area and gate: match the train number on the departure board and watch the boarding status.
  5. Board and find the assigned seat: carriage and seat numbers are shown in the booking record.
  6. Exit with the same passport: keep the document accessible until you are outside the arrival station.

Make five decisions before your first train journey

  1. Where to book: use the official China Railway 12306 English website or app and complete identity verification early.
  2. How the passport name is entered: the booking details must match the passport; a name cannot simply be corrected after purchase.
  3. Which station you need: major cities have several stations, often far apart.
  4. Whether rail is faster door to door: three- to six-hour city pairs often work well, but the full transfer time matters.
  5. Who needs more margin: families, older travelers, large luggage and first-time manual-gate users need a calmer station plan.

High-speed rail connects many classic China routes, but the passport, station and transfer plan still need to work together.

1. Verify your passport and book through 12306

China’s official guidance for foreign travelers says passport holders can buy tickets through the 12306 English website, the 12306 app or the booking hotline. Identity verification is required before purchase. Travelers can enter their name, nationality and passport number as instructed, upload the passport information page for manual verification, or complete verification at a station ticket office.

Online payment may support Chinese or foreign bank cards and mobile payment methods. Available methods can change, so check the current 12306 interface or station signage. If your date, train or seat needs to change, review the current endorsement and refund rules in the original booking channel.

2. Your passport is part of the boarding process

Carry the original valid passport used to buy the ticket. Depending on the station and document, you may use an automatic gate or be directed to a manual ticket check. China Railway’s English FAQ states that an itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not a boarding document.

For a family or group, check each passenger’s English name, passport number and expiry date separately. Do not substitute a nickname, Chinese name or a different name order from the passport.

3. Choose the station, not just the city

Shanghai Hongqiao and Shanghai Railway Station, Beijing South and Beijing West, or Chengdu East and Chengdu South can create very different hotel transfers. Check the train and the station together before locking the day’s schedule.

For a first journey, a family or anyone likely to use a manual gate, our planning recommendation is to allow at least 45 to 60 minutes. This is itinerary advice, not a fixed railway rule. Holiday periods, very large stations and peak travel dates require more margin.

4. Match luggage and seat class to the whole day

China Railway's current English FAQ states a free carry-on allowance of 20 kg for each adult passenger. On EMU high-speed trains, the sum of a bag's external length, width and height should not exceed 130 cm. Foldable wheelchairs used by travelers with disabilities are excluded from the luggage total. Oversized or prohibited items may be refused, so check the latest 12306 rules before packing.

First-station checklist

  • Booking: the passenger name and passport number match the original passport.
  • Station: the full departure station—not only the city—is saved in the transfer plan.
  • Timing: the hotel departure time includes traffic, security and a possible manual identity lane.
  • Luggage: each traveler can manage the bags quickly through security and onto the carriage.
  • Arrival: the next transfer starts from the correct exit and leaves margin for a delayed disembarkation.

Second class is practical for many city pairs. First class can give more personal space, but the decision should reflect journey length, traveler age, luggage and what happens after arrival. A group with several large suitcases needs more time to board, store bags and leave the train, so avoid tight onward connections.

5. City combinations that work well by rail

  • Beijing–Xi’an: combines imperial history and the Terracotta Warriors in one classic route.
  • Beijing–Shanghai: useful for a seven- to ten-day first trip when the travel day fits the overall pace.
  • Shanghai–Suzhou/Hangzhou/Nanjing: short links that extend Shanghai into Jiangnan gardens, canals and culture.
  • Chengdu–Chongqing: connects pandas, Sichuan food, mountain-city streets and Yangtze scenery.

The value of rail is not only speed; it is how well the next city fits the trip.

Plan the complete travel day, not only the train ride

A train’s journey time is only one part of your day. Add hotel check-out and transfer, station security and passport checks, the ride itself, time to exit, and the transfer to your next hotel. Leave room for meals and a delayed arrival before deciding what sightseeing fits.

Arriving in Zhangjiajie: choose your hotel area first

Zhangjiajie has both Zhangjiajie Railway Station and Zhangjiajie West Railway Station. Check the station printed on your booking. Wulingyuan’s forest-park area and downtown Zhangjiajie are different bases: choose the hotel around the visits you plan, then arrange the station-to-hotel connection.

Hunan’s government has documented tourist bus links between railway-station areas and major scenic areas. This is evidence of a transport option, not a guarantee of a current departure or fare. Confirm the operating route, last departure, luggage suitability and your hotel’s stop before relying on a bus, especially for an evening arrival.

Practical planning choice: treat a late arrival as a transfer and check-in day. Keep a major park visit for a separate usable day unless your confirmed transport, admission and opening times leave enough margin.

6. When local itinerary coordination helps

A single rail booking is often manageable independently. The harder task is connecting train times with hotel check-out, luggage, station transfers, attraction reservations and the pace of the next city—especially for families, private groups and multi-city journeys.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreign passport holders buy China train tickets on 12306?

Yes. Foreign travelers can complete real-name verification and buy through the 12306 English website or app, or use a valid passport at a station ticket office.

Do I need a paper ticket for China high-speed rail?

Normally you use the original valid identification document used for booking to enter, exit and board. An itinerary sheet is not a boarding document.

How early should a first-time visitor arrive at the station?

Our planning recommendation is 45 to 60 minutes for a first journey, a family group or anyone likely to use a manual gate. Actual security and boarding times vary by station and date.

Which China cities work well by high-speed rail?

Beijing–Xi’an, Beijing–Shanghai, Shanghai–Hangzhou/Suzhou, Shanghai–Nanjing and Chengdu–Chongqing are common rail-friendly combinations, but station access and the complete route still matter.
