Shanghai arrival guide

Shanghai Pudong Airport to the City: Metro, Maglev, Taxi or Private Transfer?

Choose by landing time, luggage, group size and where your hotel actually is.

By 1st China Trip and First Landing International TravelUpdated 27 September 2026

Short answer: take Metro Line 2 for the lowest-cost direct rail connection, use the Maglev when you value the fastest airport leg and can handle a transfer at Longyang Road, choose an official taxi for simple door-to-door travel, and pre-arrange a private transfer for families, groups, heavy luggage or late arrivals.

Choose in 20 seconds

  • Metro Line 2: best value for daytime arrivals with manageable luggage.
  • Maglev: fastest airport leg; most hotels still require another transfer.
  • Official taxi: flexible door-to-door option with 24-hour airport ranks.
  • Private transfer: strongest choice when meeting by name removes real arrival stress.

Metro Line 2: the best-value default

Pudong Airport Terminals 1 and 2 are served by Metro Line 2, which also connects to Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2. It works well when you arrive during operating hours, can manage your bags and your hotel is close to Line 2 or an easy interchange.

Maglev: eight minutes to Longyang Road

The official operator says the one-way airport leg takes about eight minutes. Longyang Road is a transport hub, so most visitors continue by Metro, taxi or pre-arranged pickup.

Official taxi: simple and available 24 hours

The official Pudong Airport taxi ranks at both terminals provide 24-hour service. Use the signed rank outside arrivals and keep the hotel name, full address and phone number in Chinese. Ignore unsolicited ride offers inside the terminal.

Private transfer: when certainty is worth more

A pre-arranged pickup is usually the cleanest choice after a long-haul flight, with children, several large bags, an older traveller, a group, or a hotel that is awkward by Metro. Share the flight number, terminal and passenger phone number before departure.

Before leaving arrivals

  1. Confirm the terminal and turn on mobile data.
  2. Save the hotel name and full address in Chinese.
  3. Check the last train if choosing rail.
  4. Use only the official taxi queue or agreed driver meeting point.
  5. Keep a screenshot of the route and the local contact.
