Short answer: Mutianyu is usually the safest first choice for international visitors, families and travellers who want flexible walking. Badaling is the best-known section and has the clearest independent rail connection. Jinshanling is the stronger choice for active travellers who care most about hiking, landscape and photography.
The Great Wall is not one entrance or one continuous sightseeing path. Different sections offer different transport, terrain, facilities and crowd patterns. The right decision should be made together with your Beijing hotel location, walking ability, weather, ticket availability and return plan.

Which Great Wall section is best for a first visit?
Choose Mutianyu for the most flexible first visit
Mutianyu is often the best balance for a first Great Wall day. It has dramatic mountain scenery, a well-restored wall, enclosed cable-car options and different walking levels. The official scenic-area guidance includes an easier route using the cable car near Tower 14, as well as more demanding routes towards higher towers.
It works particularly well for:
- families with children;
- older travellers who still want a real Great Wall experience;
- mixed groups with different walking abilities;
- visitors using a private car and guide;
- travellers who want scenery without committing to a long hike.
Mutianyu also has a slide/toboggan option, but the cable car, ropeway and slide are operated as separate products. Tickets are not automatically interchangeable. The admission ticket, internal shuttle and ascent/descent product may all be separate.
Choose Badaling for fame and independent rail access
Badaling is the most internationally recognised section and one of the most developed. Its strongest practical advantage is transport: travellers can use high-speed rail services to Badaling Great Wall Station, as well as suburban rail, buses or private transport.
It suits travellers who:
- want to visit the best-known section;
- prefer a clear independent public-transport route;
- have limited time and can secure suitable train times;
- value extensive visitor facilities.
The trade-off is popularity. Badaling can feel busier, especially on weekends and Chinese public holidays. A famous section is not automatically the best section for every family or photographer.
Choose Jinshanling for hiking and landscape
Jinshanling is farther from central Beijing and requires more careful transport planning, but it rewards active travellers with long ridgelines, dense watchtowers and a stronger sense of the Wall crossing open mountain terrain.
It suits:
- active adults and experienced walkers;
- photographers;
- travellers who prefer fewer large tour groups;
- visitors who want several hours of purposeful hiking;
- people willing to protect a longer full day.
The 2026 peak-season operating notice opens the main entrance early and keeps the East Gate and cableway operating during published hours. Exact access can change with maintenance, weather and seasonal notices, so the route should be checked again shortly before travel.
How do you get to the Great Wall from Beijing?
Mutianyu
The official Beijing visitor information recommends Express Bus 916 from Dongzhimen to Huairou Beidajie, followed by a local H-series bus to the Mutianyu scenic area. This is possible for independent travellers, but it involves a transfer and requires attention to the final return times.
A private car is simpler for families, hotel pickups, early starts and groups that want to adjust the walking route after seeing the weather and energy level on the day.
Badaling
Badaling has the clearest rail option. High-speed trains serve Badaling Great Wall Station from Beijing-area stations, subject to the live China Railway 12306 timetable and ticket availability. Buses, suburban rail and private cars are also possible.
Rail can reduce road uncertainty, but travellers still need to allow time for station security, boarding, walking from the station and the fixed return departure.
Jinshanling
Jinshanling is in Luanping County, Hebei, beyond the simpler Beijing suburban routes. Seasonal tourist buses have operated from Dongzhimen on selected days, but schedules can change. For a private trip, a pre-arranged vehicle is usually the most reliable option because it protects both the morning departure and the return after hiking.
How much time should you allow?
Treat the Great Wall as a full-day Beijing excursion, even when the time physically spent on the wall is two to four hours.
A realistic Mutianyu or Badaling day may look like:
- 07:30: leave a central Beijing hotel;
- 09:00–09:30: arrive, complete ticket checks and enter the scenic area;
- 10:00–14:00: ascend, walk, stop at viewpoints and rest;
- 14:00–15:00: descend and have lunch;
- 15:00–17:30: return to Beijing with traffic buffer.
Jinshanling normally needs a longer driving allowance and may justify three to four hours of hiking. A sunrise, sunset or night programme requires a separate operating check and should not be assumed to run every day.
What does a Great Wall visit cost?
Do not compare tours using one headline number. A Great Wall day can contain several separate costs:
- scenic-area admission;
- internal shuttle between the visitor area and entrance;
- cable car, ropeway or slide/toboggan;
- transport from and back to Beijing;
- guide service;
- meals and personal purchases.
For reference, the official Badaling page lists adult admission at CNY 40 in peak season and CNY 35 in the off-season. Mutianyu’s products are sold separately and its official website should be used for current combinations. Jinshanling prices and access should be verified through the current official scenic-area channel or on-site service before departure.
Prices, opening hours and seasonal programmes can change. The figures above were checked in August 2026 and should be verified again for the traveller’s actual date.
What can you actually do on the Great Wall?
A Great Wall day is not only “climbing stairs.” Depending on the section and group, it can include:
- walking between restored watchtowers;
- using a cable car to save energy for the wall itself;
- choosing a short family route or a longer ridge hike;
- photographing mountain layers and defensive architecture;
- learning how beacon towers, battlements and terrain worked together;
- taking a slide/toboggan descent where operating and suitable;
- adding a relaxed local lunch rather than rushing straight back to the city.
The best private arrangement is not necessarily the longest hike. It is the route that gives the group enough challenge, scenery and context without creating unnecessary fatigue for the rest of the Beijing stay.
Common mistakes
Choosing a section only because it is famous
Badaling is famous, but Mutianyu may be more comfortable and Jinshanling may be more rewarding for hiking.
Booking admission but forgetting the other components
At Mutianyu, admission, shuttle and ascent/descent products can be separate. Always check what a ticket actually includes.
Planning a half-day without transport buffer
Road traffic, station procedures, scenic-area transfers and queues all consume time. A rushed half-day often reduces the Great Wall to one photograph.
Ignoring weather and mobility
Heat, rain, snow, wind and steep steps can change the route. A good plan includes an easier alternative and clear turnaround time.

For most first-time international visitors, start with Mutianyu. Choose Badaling when independent rail access or its historical fame is the priority. Choose Jinshanling when the group is active and the hike itself is the reason for the day.
